A COIN collector spotted a valuable quarter in a stash of loose change and explained exactly how to identify it.

Coins don't have to be extremely old to be worth some serious cash.

Richard (@coincollection66) shared an example of a quarter from 2005 that can be worth as much as $800.

In the TikTok, he points out a Minnesota quarter among a pile of pennies and other loose change.

"I just found this quarter and it's worth $800 bucks," he says.

The coin is from the 50 State Quarters program, which ran from 1999 to 2008, and produced a variety of coins for each state.

The one that Richard found features a fisherman on a lake with several spruce trees in the background on the reverse of the quarter.

It has a doubled die error, showing an extra tree between two taller ones just to the right of the state's geographical outline.

"Counting four spruce trees to the right of the state outline inset, one should spy the appearance of a partial ghostlike spruce tree immediately to the right of the fourth primary spruce," reports the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS).

"This partial tree should be indicated by the appearance of three pronounced spruce boughs."

When the coins were first minted, the error was discovered rather quickly by collectors who went into a frenzy trying to find them all.

The "most pronounced and desirable" of more than four dozen different doubled-die varieties sold for a whopping $800, while others sold for $500.

Many collectors consider the quarter to be a must-have acquisition. Luckily, lower grades sell for around $40 only.

SPARE CHANGE

Fellow TikTok user TreasureTown shared how to spot a quarter that's worth $80,000.

It's a 1932 Washington quarter with a D mint mark that sold for $82,250 in 2015.

The mint mark can be found on the obverse of the quarter under Washington's neck.

The coin only has a mintage of 436,800 making it "the rarest Washington quarters you can find," according to the collector.

Heritage Auctions, which regularly sells sought-after coins, called it the “King of the Washington Quarters."

The highest one of the coins has ever sold for was $143,750 in 2008.
