After Sandhurst, he joined the British Army and was promoted to lieutenant in the Highland Light Infantry. By developing a love for theaters, he found a supporting role in the British film There Goes the Bride. Tired of peacetime troops, he resigned from the commission in 1933, moved to New York, and then to Hollywood.
